
Getting Your Bathroom Heat Just Right
When you’re picking out an infrared lamp for the bathroom, your first instinct might be to just grab the one with the biggest number on the box. But here’s the thing: more wattage isn’t always better. It’s really more about how the heat fits the actual shape and size of your room.
Picking the right power for your space
Think about the size of the room first. A tiny powder room is a completely different beast than a massive master bath. If you’re working with a small space, something in the 250W to 400W range usually does the trick. For those bigger bathrooms, you’ll probably want a few different lamps or one of the heavy hitters (600W+). But be careful. If you put a monster lamp in a tiny room, you end up with a “hot spot.” You’ll feel like you’re standing under a heat lamp at a buffet, while the rest of the room stays chilly. Plus, your thermostat will keep clicking on and off every two minutes, which just wears out the equipment faster.
The ceiling height trap
Distance matters. A lot. If you have standard ceilings, mid-range wattage feels great. But if you’ve got those fancy vaulted ceilings or a lot of open air above you, the heat has a long way to travel before it hits you. In those cases, you’ve got two choices: bump up the wattage or go with short-wave infrared lamps. Short-wave heat is a bit more aggressive—it cuts through the air and reaches you much faster.
A few things to keep in mind
Higher wattage gets you warm almost instantly. It’s great. But it also puts a lot more stress on your electrical system. If you try to run four 600W lamps on some thin, old wiring, you’re asking for trouble. You might see a voltage drop, or worse. Definitely double-check your breaker capacity before you start installing a bunch of high-power lights. My best advice? Spread the heat out. Instead of one giant, scorching heat source in the middle of the room, go with a few lower-wattage lamps placed strategically. It makes the whole room feel cozy and even, rather than just hot in one spot.
