
Keeping Your Rinse-Zone IR Lamps from Blowing a Fuse
Water and electricity don’t mix. We all know that. But when you’re running infrared lamps in a rinse stage, that’s exactly the battle you’re fighting. Moisture loves to find a way in, and once it does, you’re looking at current leaks, short circuits, or—worst case—a tripped breaker that shuts down your entire line. Nobody wants a dead PLC board on a Tuesday morning. That’s why we build these lamps to stay bone-dry.
Why we test every single tube
Some companies just spot-check a few lamps from a batch and call it a day. We don’t do that. Every single tube we ship goes through high-voltage withstand (hi-pot) and insulation resistance tests. We hit them with a voltage way higher than what they’ll see in your shop just to see if they flinch. If there’s a microscopic crack in the quartz seal? It fails. We toss it. Simple as that. It sounds like overkill, but it’s not. One bad lamp in a rinse line can compromise the electrical safety of your whole machine. It’s just not worth the risk.
The heat vs. moisture struggle
Here’s the thing: waterproofing an IR lamp is a bit of a balancing act. To keep the water out of the filaments, we use specialized seals on the end caps. They work great, but they also create a thermal bottleneck. The heat can’t escape the ends of the tube as easily as it would if the lamp were just sitting in open air. Because of this, you have to be smart about your housing. If you cram these lamps in too tight without giving the seals some room to breathe, the heat builds up and the seals break down way faster than they should. Give them some air.
Getting it right on the shop floor
When you’re wiring these up, make sure your grounding is rock solid. Our insulation testing is rigorous, but your machine’s chassis still needs to be properly bonded. These lamps are built to take a beating in wet zones, but they aren’t magic. Pair them with a power supply that’s actually spec’d for the job. Otherwise, you’ll be dealing with annoying flickering or voltage drops across those long rinse lines.
